Puppy Biting Tips
So you got a new puppy. You bring him/her home and then it begins. Your puppy is a biting machine. Your puppy bites everything and everyone.
It is cute at first, but then it starts to hurt. The teeth are incredibly sharp. The question is, “how do you stop it?” The truth is, stopping puppies from bitting can be difficult.
However, it is possible by following some guidelines and tips. Below we will discuss some of the best tips that you can use in order to stop puppy biting.
Yelp
One of the best and easiest ways to get your puppy to realize that biting is not good is by yelping. You can let out a simple but loud “Yelp” when they bite you. This mimics what other puppies would do when they are playing with one another.
Therefore, this is a good tactic to use and it should work on most dogs. Some dogs do not respond to this tactic and only get more excited. A good way to avoid your puppy from getting more excited is to avoid touching them after you “yelp.”
Turn Your Back
Another good way to get your puppy to stop biting you is by turning your back every time your puppy bites you. This will teach your puppy that they do not get affection when they bite you.
Instead, they get ignored. Puppies do not like to be ignored. Therefore, your puppy might respond to this very well. If your puppy does not respond to this, they are likely only going to keep biting you when you turn around. Therefore, you will want to try a different technique.
Toy
Another thing that you could do if your puppy fails to respond to the two tips above is utilize a toy. You can simply take a toy that the puppy is allowed to bite and transfer the bite onto the toy.
This will effectively teach your puppy that they can bite, but only the toy. Sometimes a puppy simply bites because they are either teething or they want attention.
As long as the puppy is biting the toy instead of yourself, you can give the puppy his/her attention. This will distract the puppy and teach the puppy to play and bite toys without them even realizing they are being taught to do that.
As you can see, there are a bunch of different ways in which you can get puppies to stop biting. It is important to choose a method or multiple methods and to stick with them.
The truth is, it is going to take a lot of work and a lot of consistently for your puppy to learn that biting is not a good thing to do. By following the tips and applying them consistently, you should be able to effectively teach your puppy not to bite humans. You will also gain more of a bond with your puppy by teaching them different things.
